Stairs and Handrails

Quartersawn White Oak stair and handrail system incorporating the classic Japanese shoji and kimono-makers Asanoha pattern.  This delicate looking structure is sturdy enough to easily withstand the onslaught of large pets and small children.

Treads, risers posts and balusters are all made of solid quartersawn white oak, a classic American hardwood from colonial times onward.  Strength, stability and beauty characterize items made from this wood.  Stickley used it exclusively in his Mission Style oak furniture.

For handrails that do not touch the floor, a strong top and bottom rail is milled to receive the narrow tongues of both balusters and fillet.  When glued under pressure this type of joinery forms a deep and secure bond between vertical and horizontal elements without the use of  metal connectors.
